History

The EMD GP38-2 entered production in 1972 as part of General Motors Electro-Motive Division's updated Dash 2 series, which modernized the earlier generation of GP locomotives with improved electrical systems and more reliable components. The GP38-2 was a direct successor to the GP38, retaining the same basic platform but benefiting from the modular electrical cabinet design and enhanced adhesion control systems that defined the Dash 2 family. Its 2,000 horsepower rating placed it in a practical middle tier of road switcher power, making it attractive to railroads seeking a versatile and economical locomotive for branch line work, local freight, and yard assignments where the higher horsepower of turbocharged units was unnecessary. Production continued for fourteen years, from 1972 through 1986, with a total of 2,222 units constructed. American railroads accounted for the largest share of purchases, with the Southern Railway being among the most prominent buyers, acquiring 257 examples. The locomotive also found buyers in Canada and Mexico, and a single unit was delivered to the Saudi Railways Organization. Canadian National Railway took delivery of 51 units built to a distinctive wide-nose comfort cab specification, a variant sometimes informally referred to by enthusiasts as the GP38-2W. Mexican railways received a number of units equipped with high short hoods housing steam generators to support passenger train heating requirements. The GP38-2's legacy proved remarkably durable. Because it lacks a turbocharger, the locomotive has a reputation for mechanical simplicity and reduced maintenance demands compared to higher-horsepower turbocharged models. This quality helped ensure that large numbers remained in active service long after their original delivery, and many units passed through multiple owners as railroads consolidated following the wave of mergers in the 1980s and 1990s. Both Norfolk Southern and CSX undertook cab replacement programs on aging examples, and Union Pacific rebuilt 167 of its GP38-2 fleet into a variant designated GP38N at the railroad's Jenks Shop, equipping those units with microprocessor control systems to improve adhesion and extend operational life.

Technical notes

The GP38-2 is powered by the EMD 645E prime mover, a 16-cylinder naturally aspirated engine producing 2,000 horsepower. Unlike many of its contemporaries in the EMD catalog, the 645E in this application relies on twin Roots-type blowers rather than a turbocharger for air induction, a design choice that reduces complexity and the risk of turbocharger-related failures. The locomotive rides on a B-B wheel arrangement, meaning two two-axle trucks, with all four axles powered through DC traction motors. The Dash 2 designation signified a comprehensive revision of the electrical cabinet design, replacing many of the modular plug-in components from earlier production runs and providing improved electrical reliability throughout the locomotive's systems. The Canadian comfort cab variant differed from the standard GP38-2 in several external details beyond the wide nose structure itself. These units featured different arrangements for the electrical cabinet air filter box and equipment blower ducting, anticlimbers and vertical steps on the end platforms, and snow shields added over the inertial filter air intakes. Despite these distinctions, the underlying mechanical and electrical systems remained consistent with the standard production model, and the presence of the comfort cab carried no separate factory designation on the builders' plates. The locomotive's straightforward mechanical layout, combined with its moderate but useful power output, contributed to its widespread adoption and the unusually long production run it sustained across more than a decade of manufacture.
