History

The Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad traces its origins to 1988, when it began operations over a network of tracks that had previously belonged to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, itself the successor to the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway. The BR&P had been a significant regional carrier in western New York and Pennsylvania before its absorption into the B&O system, and the lines it left behind formed the geographic backbone of what would become the BPRR. From the outset, the railroad connected Buffalo, New York, with points south through the hill country of western Pennsylvania, serving an industrial corridor rich in natural resources and manufacturing activity. The railroad operates as a subsidiary of Genesee and Wyoming Inc., one of the larger short line and regional railroad holding companies in North America. In the early 2000s, the BPRR expanded its scope by absorbing several other Genesee and Wyoming properties operating in the same general territory, including the Allegheny and Eastern Railroad, the Pittsburg and Shawmut Railroad, and the Bradford Industrial Railroad. This consolidation brought additional track mileage and traffic sources under a single operating banner, and the combined system eventually reached approximately 659 route miles spanning portions of New York and Pennsylvania. The railroad carries a diverse mix of freight including coal, steel, chemicals, petroleum products, paper, and sand, reflecting the varied industrial character of the region it serves. The BPRR has adapted its operations over the decades in response to infrastructure challenges and shifting traffic patterns. A deteriorating bridge at Springville, New York, forced the railroad to reroute its Buffalo-bound trains during the 1990s, sending traffic northward via former Rochester and Southern trackage before joining ex-Pennsylvania Railroad rails into Buffalo. Around 2005, the railroad rehabilitated a previously dormant line known as the Indiana Subdivision to restore service to the Homer City Generating Station in Pennsylvania. In 2006, Railway Age magazine recognized the Buffalo and Pittsburgh as its Regional Railroad of the Year, a distinction that acknowledged the carrier's operational performance and its importance to the communities and industries it serves across the two-state region.
