History

Canadian National Railway is one of North America's two transcontinental Class I railroads, operating a network of approximately 20,000 route miles spanning Canada from coast to coast and extending south through the U.S. Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1919 as a Canadian government-owned railroad consolidating several bankrupt private lines, CN was privatized in 1995 and is now publicly traded. Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, CN is the only railroad serving three coasts: the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico via its 1999 acquisition of Illinois Central. CN was an early adopter of Precision Scheduled Railroading under CEO Hunter Harrison, a philosophy that has since spread across the North American rail industry.
