The company traces its origins to William K. Walthers, who began scratch-building model railroad components as a young hobbyist and eventually started selling electrical and control components to fellow enthusiasts. Over the following decades the business grew from a small attic operation into a major manufacturer and nationwide distributor, expanding its catalog steadily and bringing operating layouts to the 1939 World's Fair to help promote the hobby to a broader public. The company has remained based in Milwaukee and has passed through three generations of the Walthers family before growing into the corporate structure it maintains today.

In HO scale, Walthers is particularly well regarded for its passenger car offerings, with the company considered one of the leading producers of HO scale passenger equipment spanning the streamliner era through to more contemporary prototypes. The Mainline series represents a mid-tier offering balancing detail and affordability, while the Proto line, which came to Walthers through its 2005 acquisition of Life-Like from Lifoam Industries, serves as the higher-end tier with more refined detailing and greater prototype fidelity.
