History

The GE ET44AC represents the Tier 4 evolution of GE Transportation's highly successful Evolution Series locomotive family, entering production in 2012 as a direct successor to the ES44AC. The designation reflects its compliance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 emissions standards, which imposed significantly stricter limits on nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions from new locomotive prime movers. Developing a locomotive capable of meeting these standards while maintaining or improving upon the performance of its predecessor required substantial engineering investment, particularly in the fuel injection and exhaust aftertreatment systems of the GEVO-12 engine. GE accomplished this without sacrificing the 4,400 horsepower output that had made the ES44AC so popular among North American Class I railroads. Every major United States and Canadian Class I railroad has placed orders for the ET44AC, including BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, and CPKC. This breadth of adoption speaks to the locomotive's commercial success and operational reliability. CSX Transportation and Union Pacific both operate their units under the internal designation ET44AH, reflecting the heavy ballasted configuration favored by those carriers, with Union Pacific additionally applying the marketing name C45AH. BNSF similarly operates a ballasted variant designated ET44ACH, with individual units weighing approximately 436,320 pounds. Total production has surpassed 2,500 units and continues, making the ET44AC one of the most numerous freight locomotive types currently operating in North America. The ET44AC's significance extends beyond its sales figures. The Evolution Series as a whole was recognized by Trains Magazine as one of the ten locomotives that fundamentally changed railroading, and the ET44AC represents the most advanced expression of that lineage available in the standard C-C configuration. Its introduction helped establish Tier 4 technology as operationally viable for heavy freight service, easing concerns among railroads that the added complexity required to meet the new emissions thresholds would compromise reliability. With production ongoing from GE Transportation's Fort Worth, Texas facility, the type continues to shape the character of mainline freight operations across the continent.

Technical notes

The ET44AC is powered by the GEVO-12, a 12-cylinder version of GE's purpose-built GEVO engine family. In its Tier 4 configuration, the GEVO-12 incorporates high-pressure common rail fuel injection and an exhaust gas recirculation system to reduce combustion temperatures and limit the formation of nitrogen oxides, addressing the EPA's Tier 4 requirements without relying solely on diesel particulate filters. The engine produces 4,400 horsepower, delivered to the rails through AC traction motors mounted on two three-axle trucks in a C-C wheel arrangement. AC traction technology provides superior adhesion compared to DC alternatives, allowing the locomotive to apply greater tractive effort at low speeds without wheel slip, an important advantage in demanding freight service over mountain grades or in adverse weather conditions. The ET44AC shares its general carbody architecture with the ES44AC, maintaining the characteristic low short hood and high short nose profile familiar from the broader Evolution Series. Ballasted variants operated by carriers such as BNSF, CSX, and Union Pacific carry additional weight to further improve tractive effort, with some configurations reaching approximately 436,320 pounds. The locomotive's control systems are compatible with distributed power operation, allowing multiple units to be coordinated remotely along the length of a train, a capability that has become standard practice for long and heavy freight movements across North American mainlines.
