History
The EMD SW8 was a diesel-electric switcher locomotive produced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in the United States and General Motors Diesel in Canada between September 1950 and February 1954. Designed for yard switching and light transfer service, the SW8 occupied a mid-range position in EMD's extensive switcher lineup, offering more power than the smaller SW7 while remaining economical for railroads that did not require the output of heavier road switchers. In total, well over 300 examples were built for American railroads, with an additional 65 units constructed in Canada by General Motors Diesel. The SW8 was eventually succeeded in EMD's catalog by the SW900, which entered production in December 1953 and offered a modest increase in horsepower. Among the more notable chapters in the SW8's history was its service with the United States Army during the Korean War. The Army ordered 41 units, numbered 2000 through 2040, which were shipped to the Korean peninsula in the spring of 1951 to support military logistics operations. After the conclusion of the war, some of these locomotives were transferred to the South Korean government and operated by the Korean National Railroad, while others were retained by the Army and assigned to domestic installations including depots, ammunition plants, and military bases across the United States. Most Army-operated SW8s were retired from service around 1990, replaced by rebuilt road switchers sourced from various rebuilders. Several SW8s have survived into preservation. Two former Army examples, originally numbered 2019 and 2022 in US Army service, are maintained at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Alabama. Both units finished their military careers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and were acquired by the museum in 1995. In South Korea, at least one former Army SW8, believed to be KNR number 2001, survived into the 2010s and was reportedly stored at the Korea Railroad's Busan Rolling Stock Workshop, with discussions underway about placing it on public display as the oldest surviving diesel locomotive in the country.
Technical notes
The SW8 was powered by an EMD 567-series prime mover, with early production units using the 567B eight-cylinder engine and later examples, built from October 1953 onward, equipped with either the 567BC or 567C variant. All configurations produced a rated output of 800 horsepower, transmitted to the rails through a standard DC electrical transmission driving four traction motors arranged in a B-B, or Bo'Bo', wheel configuration. This arrangement placed two two-axle trucks beneath the locomotive, providing acceptable tractive effort and rail adhesion for the yard and branch-line duties the SW8 was intended to perform. The locomotive's compact and straightforward design was characteristic of EMD's switcher philosophy, prioritizing reliability and ease of maintenance over complexity. An unusual experimental variant emerged in May 1953, when EMD built a single SW8 fitted with a hydraulic transmission rather than the conventional electrical system. Designated the DH2, this prototype was displayed at a trade show in 1955 to gauge industry interest, but it attracted no buyers. The locomotive was subsequently rebuilt with a standard electrical transmission and entered service as EMD's own plant switcher, numbered 105, continuing in that role until 1968. Separately, 24 TR6 cow-and-calf paired sets were produced based on SW8 components, extending the model's mechanical platform into a specialized configuration suited for operations requiring a single crew to control multiple units from one cab.
