GE ET44ACHistory
Full prototype page →The GE ET44AC represents the Tier 4 evolution of GE Transportation's highly successful Evolution Series locomotive family, entering production in 2012 as a direct successor to the ES44AC. The designation reflects its compliance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 emissions standards, which imposed significantly stricter limits on nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions from new locomotive prime movers. Developing a locomotive capable of meeting these standards while maintaining or improving upon the performance of its predecessor required substantial engineering investment, particularly in the fuel injection and exhaust aftertreatment systems of the GEVO-12 engine. GE accomplished this without sacrificing the 4,400 horsepower output that had made the ES44AC so popular among North American Class I railroads. Every major United States and Canadian Class I railroad has placed orders for the ET44AC, including BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, and CPKC. This breadth of adoption speaks to the locomotive's commercial success and operational reliability. CSX Transportation and Union Pacific both operate their units under the internal designation ET44AH, reflecting the heavy ballasted configuration favored by those carriers, with Union Pacific additionally applying the marketing name C45AH. BNSF similarly operates a ballasted variant designated ET44ACH, with individual units weighing approximately 436,320 pounds. Total production has surpassed 2,500 units and continues, making the ET44AC one of the most numerous freight locomotive types currently operating in North America. The ET44AC's significance extends beyond its sales figures. The Evolution Series as a whole was recognized by Trains Magazine as one of the ten locomotives that fundamentally changed railroading, and the ET44AC represents the most advanced expression of that lineage available in the standard C-C configuration. Its introduction helped establish Tier 4 technology as operationally viable for heavy freight service, easing concerns among railroads that the added complexity required to meet the new emissions thresholds would compromise reliability. With production ongoing from GE Transportation's Fort Worth, Texas facility, the type continues to shape the character of mainline freight operations across the continent.
