History
Full prototype page →The GE Dash 9-44CWL is a variant within General Electric's Dash 9 family of diesel-electric locomotives, which emerged in the early 1990s as GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania continued refining its product line for North American freight service. The broader Dash 9 series made its debut in 1993, carrying forward the naming tradition GE had established with its Dash 7 locomotives of the 1970s. The series quickly attracted orders from major railroads across the continent, including the Chicago and North Western Railway, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Southern Pacific, Canadian National Railway, BC Rail, and Union Pacific Railroad, demonstrating the platform's wide commercial appeal during a period of intense railroad consolidation and demand for higher-horsepower road power. The Dash 9-44CWL designation reflects a specific configuration within this locomotive family, with the "L" suffix distinguishing it from the more widely produced standard Dash 9-44CW, also known by its model designation C44-9W. The standard C44-9W itself was produced through the early 2000s until tightening United States emissions regulations, which took full effect on January 1, 2005, prompted GE to transition production to the cleaner ES44DC platform. Some railroads opted instead for the AC traction equivalent, the AC4400CW, including CSX and Canadian Pacific, who favored the enhanced pulling characteristics that AC traction motors provided in certain operating environments. The legacy of the Dash 9 platform extended beyond North American borders, with related designs appearing in other markets. Domestically, Norfolk Southern purchased the closely related Dash 9-40CW in quantity and subsequently undertook an upgrade program between approximately 2013 and 2014 to bring those units to Dash 9-44CW specification by removing the power-restricting software in the engine-governing system. BNSF also pursued its own rebuilding program with former Santa Fe C44-9W units, converting them into the AC44C4M variant equipped with AC traction motors and an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, extending the operational life of the underlying Dash 9 platform well into the twenty-first century.
