History

The Western Pacific Railroad traces its origins to 1903, when financier George Jay Gould organized the Western Pacific Railway Company with the ambition of extending his transcontinental rail empire to the Pacific Coast. Gould's Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, already a key element of his system, had been effectively cut off from California traffic by rival maneuvering, and the new Western Pacific was conceived as a remedy. Construction proceeded through some of the most rugged terrain in the American West, following the Feather River Canyon through the Sierra Nevada and the mountains of northeastern California. The line was completed in 1909, making it the last major railroad to reach California, and it offered a genuinely competitive alternative to the Southern Pacific's long-dominant Overland Route between the San Francisco Bay Area and Ogden, Utah. After the Western Pacific Railway defaulted on its mortgage obligations, its assets were reorganized and transferred in 1916 to a successor corporation, The Western Pacific Railroad Company, which carried reporting mark WP and maintained headquarters in San Francisco. The railroad expanded its reach in 1931 by opening a branch northward from the Feather River Canyon to connect with the Great Northern Railway in northern California. This branch joined the main Oakland to Salt Lake City line at a junction known as the Keddie Wye, an unusual trackwork arrangement formed by two steel trestles and a tunnel creating a triangular intersection in the canyon. The Great Depression proved punishing to the carrier, forcing it into bankruptcy in 1935 and requiring a financial reorganization before it could continue operations. Despite these difficulties, the Western Pacific established a reputation for scenic and comfortable passenger service, becoming one of three partner railroads to inaugurate the California Zephyr in 1949. Operating jointly with the Denver and Rio Grande Western and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Western Pacific handled the Zephyr between Oakland and Salt Lake City until the train was discontinued in 1970. The railroad also controlled several subsidiary short lines, among them the Sacramento Northern Railway and the Tidewater Southern Railway, which extended its reach into California's agricultural interior. By the late twentieth century, Western Pacific had become an attractive acquisition target amid a broader wave of railroad consolidation sweeping North America. The Union Pacific Corporation pursued a merger, and in 1982 the Interstate Commerce Commission approved the absorption of the Western Pacific along with the Missouri Pacific Railroad into the Union Pacific system. The transaction was formally completed in early 1983, ending nearly eight decades of independent operation for the WP. The old Feather River Route became part of Union Pacific's transcontinental network, and much of the former Western Pacific main line continues to carry heavy freight traffic today. The railroad left behind a loyal following among enthusiasts and historians, and its memory is preserved in part at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California, located along its original right-of-way through the Sierra Nevada.
