History
The EMD SW7 was a diesel-electric switcher locomotive produced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division beginning in October 1949. It served as a direct successor to the earlier NW2, which had offered 1,000 horsepower, and represented EMD's effort to provide a more capable yard switcher to meet the demands of American railroads in the postwar era. A total of 488 to 489 units were manufactured, with production running through early 1951, and the majority of these locomotives were assembled at EMD's Plant Number 3 located in Cleveland, Ohio. During its production run, the SW7 attracted buyers from a range of Class I and regional railroads across the United States. In addition to the standard single-unit configurations, EMD also produced approximately 30 TR4 cow-and-calf paired sets based on the SW7 platform, allowing for increased tractive effort in demanding switching operations while keeping a single crew in the controlling cab unit. These paired sets found favor in locations where heavy cuts of cars needed to be moved efficiently within large classification yards. Production of the SW7 was discontinued in 1951 when EMD introduced the SW9, which offered incremental improvements and replaced the SW7 in the manufacturer's catalog. Despite its relatively brief production window of roughly a year and a half, the SW7 proved to be a durable and dependable design, and many examples remained in active railroad service for decades after their construction. The type contributed to the broader displacement of steam-powered switching locomotives that was well underway across American railroads by the early 1950s.
Technical notes
The SW7 was powered by the EMD 567B prime mover, a 12-cylinder version of EMD's reliable 567-series engine family, producing 1,200 horsepower. This represented a 200 horsepower improvement over the NW2 it succeeded and helped position the SW7 as a competitive option for railroads seeking greater flexibility in yard and transfer service. The locomotive rode on a B-B wheel arrangement, meaning two two-axle powered trucks, with all four axles driven by DC traction motors, a configuration that provided good adhesion and maneuverability in the tight curves typical of yard environments. The SW7's overall mechanical layout followed the established conventions of EMD's switcher line, featuring a low short hood design that gave crews reasonable visibility in both directions during switching moves. The electrical transmission system paired the 567B engine with a DC generator supplying current to the axle-mounted traction motors, a straightforward and well-understood arrangement that simplified maintenance for mechanical department personnel already familiar with earlier EMD switcher products. The platform proved robust enough to support the TR4 cow-and-calf variant, demonstrating the fundamental soundness of the underlying engineering.
