History
Full prototype page →The EMD SD60M was a significant variant of the broader SD60 family, distinguished primarily by its adoption of the North American safety cab, a full-width short hood design that represented a major departure from the conventional spartan cab used on earlier EMD road locomotives. Production of the SD60M ran from 1989 to 1995, with approximately 575 units constructed at EMD's La Grange and London, Ontario facilities. The model attracted orders from several major Class I railroads, including Union Pacific, Burlington Northern, Soo Line, and Conrail, reflecting widespread industry interest in the improved crew accommodations and crashworthiness the new cab design offered. Early production SD60Ms, built through approximately 1990, featured a distinctive three-piece windshield arrangement with upright vertical panes that earned the nickname "triclops" among railroad enthusiasts and workers alike. This windshield configuration had also appeared on the SD40-2F and the F59PH passenger locomotive. Beginning in 1991, EMD revised the design with a two-pane sloped windshield and a somewhat more tapered nose profile, giving later units a noticeably different appearance from their earlier counterparts. Both variations served their owning railroads in heavy freight service throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. The fate of many SD60Ms was shaped significantly by the 1999 division of Conrail between Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation. Units that passed to those carriers eventually faced retirement or disposal as newer locomotive generations entered service. Norfolk Southern's broader SD60E rebuilding program, which began around 2010 and targeted standard cab SD60s rather than the SD60M fleet specifically, illustrated how the underlying 710 series prime mover platform remained valuable enough to warrant investment even as the original carbodies aged out of service.
