The EMD SD70I represents a specialized variant of the broader SD70 locomotive family, produced by Electro-Motive Diesel in 1995. Only 26 examples of this model were ever built, and all of them were ordered by Canadian National Railway. The limited production run reflects the niche purpose of the design, which was developed to address specific crew comfort concerns through an innovative cab isolation system rather than to introduce changes to the locomotive's mechanical or electrical fundamentals. Canadian National's interest in the WhisperCab technology stemmed from the railroad's attention to operating conditions for its crews over long runs. The SD70I emerged during a period when North American railroads were increasingly focused on ergonomics and working conditions in locomotive cabs, and the model represented one of EMD's responses to those concerns. The WhisperCab concept proved influential, as elements of the isolation technology were subsequently incorporated into some SD70MAC locomotives and became standard equipment on the SD80MAC and SD90/43MAC models, giving the SD70I a significance beyond its modest production numbers.
