History
Full prototype page →The ET44C4 is a member of GE Transportation's Evolution Series, representing the Tier 4 emissions-compliant generation of that locomotive family. It shares its fundamental lineage with the earlier ES44C4, which was introduced in 2009, and carries forward the distinctive A1A-A1A wheel arrangement that sets both models apart from the more common C-C configuration found on the ES44AC and ET44AC. BNSF Railway has been the primary customer for the ET44C4, continuing the relationship established when BNSF served as the launch customer for the ES44C4. Production began in 2015 and has continued into the present, with more than 500 units completed as of available records. The ET44C4 represents GE's effort to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 locomotive emissions standards while preserving the operational characteristics that made the ES44C4 attractive to high-volume freight railroads. The Tier 4 standards required substantial reductions in nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions compared to the earlier Tier 2 and Tier 3 thresholds, demanding significant engineering refinements to the exhaust and combustion systems. BNSF found particular value in the C4 configuration for its heavily trafficked corridors, where the dynamic weight management system offered advantages in adhesion control without the added complexity of six powered axles. The ET44C4 is part of a broader Tier 4 Evolution Series family that has seen widespread adoption across North American Class I railroads, though the C4 variant with its unpowered center axles has remained more specialized in its customer base than the full six-motor ET44AC. Its production through the mid-2010s and beyond represents one of the later chapters of GE Transportation's North American locomotive manufacturing history, a business that was subsequently acquired by Wabtec Corporation in 2019.
