History

The ET44C4 is a member of GE Transportation's Evolution Series, representing the Tier 4 emissions-compliant generation of that locomotive family. It shares its fundamental lineage with the earlier ES44C4, which was introduced in 2009, and carries forward the distinctive A1A-A1A wheel arrangement that sets both models apart from the more common C-C configuration found on the ES44AC and ET44AC. BNSF Railway has been the primary customer for the ET44C4, continuing the relationship established when BNSF served as the launch customer for the ES44C4. Production began in 2015 and has continued into the present, with more than 500 units completed as of available records. The ET44C4 represents GE's effort to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 locomotive emissions standards while preserving the operational characteristics that made the ES44C4 attractive to high-volume freight railroads. The Tier 4 standards required substantial reductions in nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions compared to the earlier Tier 2 and Tier 3 thresholds, demanding significant engineering refinements to the exhaust and combustion systems. BNSF found particular value in the C4 configuration for its heavily trafficked corridors, where the dynamic weight management system offered advantages in adhesion control without the added complexity of six powered axles. The ET44C4 is part of a broader Tier 4 Evolution Series family that has seen widespread adoption across North American Class I railroads, though the C4 variant with its unpowered center axles has remained more specialized in its customer base than the full six-motor ET44AC. Its production through the mid-2010s and beyond represents one of the later chapters of GE Transportation's North American locomotive manufacturing history, a business that was subsequently acquired by Wabtec Corporation in 2019.

Technical notes

The ET44C4 is powered by the GEVO-12, a 12-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine producing 4,400 horsepower, the same output found across the 44-series Evolution locomotives. The locomotive rides on two three-axle trucks arranged in a C-C configuration by axle count, but only four of the six axles carry AC traction motors, with the center axle of each truck left unpowered. This produces an A1A-A1A classification under AAR wheel arrangement notation. Rather than simply leaving the center axle as dead weight, the ET44C4 incorporates a dynamic weight management system that uses air cylinders and associated linkages mounted on the truck sideframes to redistribute the locomotive's weight between the powered and unpowered axles. The onboard computer continuously monitors grade changes, wheel slip, and tractive conditions, adjusting air pressure in those cylinders to maximize adhesion at the driven axles as conditions demand. The use of four traction motors rather than six reduces mechanical complexity and the associated maintenance demands compared to a full C-C powered locomotive, while the weight management system compensates for the reduction in driven axle count by concentrating available mass where traction is needed most. The AC traction motors provide the high adhesion characteristics and broad speed range associated with AC drive systems, making the ET44C4 suitable for both heavy unit train service and intermodal operations. BNSF has ballasted its ET44C4 fleet to higher adhesion weights, consistent with its practice on other Evolution Series units designated with the ACH suffix, and the locomotives are built to comply with Tier 4 emissions standards throughout their operational lives.
