History

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad traced its origins to the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad Company, incorporated in Illinois on February 27, 1847. A revised charter established the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad on February 7, 1851, and construction commenced in Chicago that October. The line reached Joliet by October 1852 and extended to the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois, by February 22, 1854, making it the first railroad to connect Chicago with the Mississippi. A separate corporate entity, the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad, was organized in Iowa in 1853 to push the line westward from Davenport toward Council Bluffs. After the completion of a Mississippi River bridge in April 1856, the two companies were formally consolidated in 1866 to create the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, setting the stage for decades of westward expansion across the central plains. At its fullest extent the Rock Island operated more than 7,000 route miles reaching across fourteen states, stretching from Chicago and Memphis in the east to Denver, Colorado, and Santa Rosa, New Mexico, in the west, and from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the north to Galveston, Texas, and Eunice, Louisiana, in the south. The railroad was a significant passenger carrier through much of the twentieth century, launching a family of streamlined Rocket trains beginning in 1937 and jointly operating the Golden State with the Southern Pacific on the Chicago to Los Angeles corridor from 1902 until 1968. Its Rocky Mountain Rocket competed directly with the Burlington's California Zephyr service for Denver traffic, and the Twin Star Rocket connected Minneapolis with Dallas via Kansas City and Oklahoma City. By the time Amtrak assumed most intercity passenger operations in 1971, the Rock Island had reduced its passenger service to just two short runs confined entirely within Illinois, and the railroad chose not to join Amtrak, instead continuing those trains until deteriorating track conditions made further operation untenable. Financial difficulties plagued the Rock Island through the 1970s as deferred maintenance, intense competition from trucking, and an ultimately failed merger attempt with the Union Pacific sapped the railroad's resources. The proposed Union Pacific merger had been under regulatory review for roughly a decade, and its rejection in 1974 left the Rock Island without a viable path forward. The railroad entered bankruptcy in 1975 and struggled on for several more years under trustee management, but the condition of the physical plant continued to worsen and traffic declined sharply. On March 31, 1980, the Rock Island ceased all operations, making it one of the largest railroad liquidations in American history to that point. Its lines were subsequently sold off in segments to various purchasers, with portions absorbed by the Southern Pacific, the Missouri Pacific, the Consolidated Rail Corporation, and several regional and short line carriers. The Rock Island's Chicago to Kansas City main line eventually became part of what is now the BNSF Railway system, while other segments found their way into different hands or were abandoned entirely, leaving the railroad's sprawling network fragmented among many successors.
