History

Quebec-Gatineau Railway, operating under the reporting mark QGRY and known in French as Chemins de fer Québec-Gatineau, is a Class III shortline railroad serving a corridor of approximately 358 miles through the province of Quebec and into the Gatineau region of western Quebec. The railroad was established in 1997 as a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc., the large shortline holding company headquartered in the United States, operating through its Canadian affiliate Genesee & Wyoming Canada Inc. Its formation came during a period of widespread rationalization by major Class I carriers, as Canadian Pacific Railway divested itself of branch lines and secondary main lines that no longer fit its core network strategy. The railroad operates over trackage that was formerly part of Canadian Pacific's Quebec-area network, connecting the provincial capital of Quebec City with Trois-Rivières, continuing westward through Laval and Lachute, and terminating at Gatineau, the city across the Ottawa River from the national capital. This corridor had historically served both passenger and freight traffic under Canadian Pacific, but by the time Quebec-Gatineau assumed operations it was functioning primarily as a freight route. The line passes through the Saint-Maurice Valley and serves several industrial and resource-based customers along its length, reflecting the economic character of the Quebec interior with its forestry, pulp and paper, and manufacturing industries. Quebec-Gatineau Railway represents a significant example of the shortline railroad model that expanded rapidly across North America during the 1980s and 1990s, as Class I railroads sought to shed lower-density lines to smaller operators better positioned to manage local traffic and contain costs. Under Genesee & Wyoming's ownership, the railroad has continued to provide freight service to communities and industries along its route that might otherwise have lost rail access entirely. The railroad's operations reflect the ongoing importance of regional freight carriers in Quebec's transportation network, particularly for bulk commodities moving between the Saint Lawrence River corridor and the Outaouais region.
