History

The Quebec Cartier Mining railroad, operating under the reporting mark QCM and commonly known as the Cartier Railway, was established in conjunction with the founding of the Quebec Cartier Mining Company in the late 1950s to serve the iron ore operations the company was developing in the remote interior of Quebec. The railway was constructed to connect the mining sites in the rugged Canadian Shield with the port facilities at Port-Cartier on the St. Lawrence River, a distance of approximately 400 kilometers, or roughly 250 miles. This line was an engineering achievement given the challenging terrain and the near-total absence of existing infrastructure in the region. The railroad was built as an integral part of the mining enterprise rather than as a common carrier, meaning its primary and essentially exclusive purpose has always been the movement of iron ore concentrates and pellets from the inland mines to the coast for export. The railroad's operational scope expanded as Quebec Cartier Mining itself grew. When the company extended its mining activities northward to Mont Wright in 1973 and established the associated town of Fermont to house workers and their families, the railway was extended to serve that operation as well. Mont Wright became the principal mining site, featuring a large open pit and concentrator capable of producing substantial volumes of iron ore annually. From Fermont, loaded ore trains travel the full length of the railway to Port-Cartier, where a pellet plant processes a portion of the ore before shipment. The railroad operates with a fleet of approximately fifteen locomotives and roughly 500 open-deck ore cars purpose-built for this heavy unit-train operation. Ownership of the broader Quebec Cartier enterprise shifted significantly in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Dofasco, which held a major ownership stake in Quebec Cartier Mining, was acquired by the global steel giant ArcelorMittal in 2007, bringing Quebec Cartier and its railway into the portfolio of what was then the world's largest steel producer. The following year, in May 2008, the mining company was formally renamed ArcelorMittal Mines Canada, though the railroad infrastructure and its operations continued functioning in essentially the same capacity under new corporate ownership. The QCM reporting mark and the Cartier Railway have remained associated with this dedicated ore-hauling operation, which continues to represent one of the more significant private heavy-haul railways in Canada and an important link in the North American iron ore supply chain.
