History

Helm Leasing was a North American locomotive and rolling stock leasing company that operated under the reporting mark NHL. Like other equipment lessors in the rail industry, Helm Leasing served an important intermediary role, acquiring surplus or secondhand motive power and making it available to railroads on a short- or medium-term contractual basis. This arrangement allowed carriers to address temporary equipment shortfalls, manage maintenance cycles, or supplement their fleets during periods of increased traffic demand without committing to the capital expense of outright purchases. One of the more notable transactions associated with Helm Leasing involved a group of EMD F40C locomotives, the distinctive six-axle, 3,200-horsepower commuter units that had originally been acquired in 1974 for service on Milwaukee Road commuter lines in the Chicago metropolitan area. When Metra retired the majority of its F40C fleet following the arrival of new MPI MP36PH-3S locomotives in 2003 and 2004, twelve of the F40Cs passed to Helm Leasing. In 2005, Kansas City Southern entered into a contract with Helm Leasing to utilize those twelve locomotives for approximately nine months, demonstrating the kind of opportunistic, short-term deployment that equipment lessors were well positioned to facilitate. The leasing sector to which Helm Leasing belonged grew significantly in importance during the latter decades of the twentieth century as North American railroads restructured following deregulation under the Staggers Rail Act of 1980. Carriers increasingly found it advantageous to manage fleet size dynamically rather than maintaining large reserves of owned equipment, and lessors helped fill that gap. Helm Leasing's reporting mark, NHL, identified its equipment moving in interchange service across the broader North American rail network.
