History

Morrison Knudsen Corporation, the Boise, Idaho-based engineering and construction giant, operated a fleet of leased railcars and locomotives under the reporting mark MKCX as part of its broader involvement in the rail industry. The company's engagement with railroading was not incidental but grew directly from decades of infrastructure work that included building rail lines, causeways, and transit systems across North America and beyond. By the time Morrison Knudsen formalized its rail equipment leasing activities, it had already accumulated substantial expertise in virtually every facet of railroad construction and rehabilitation, giving it a credible foundation from which to participate in the equipment leasing market that supported Class I carriers and shortlines alike. The company's rail division, which eventually operated under the MK Rail name following a spinoff in 1993, gave Morrison Knudsen a direct operational presence in the locomotive business rather than merely a construction role. The firm rebuilt and in some cases manufactured motive power, including notable projects involving Delaware and Hudson ALCO PA locomotives and an experimental series of rebuilt Southern Pacific GE U25Bs fitted with Sulzer prime movers, designated the TE70-4S. Equipment associated with these programs and with broader leasing activities carried the MKCX reporting mark, identifying Morrison Knudsen as the owner or lessor of record for cars and locomotives moving in interchange service on North American railroads. Morrison Knudsen's financial difficulties in the mid-1990s, largely attributable to losses in its transit car manufacturing division, ultimately brought the parent company into bankruptcy proceedings. The MK Rail subsidiary reorganized and renamed itself MotivePower Industries following the parent's collapse in 1996, and it subsequently merged with Westinghouse Air Brake Company in 1999 to form what became Wabtec Corporation, one of the largest railroad equipment suppliers in the world. The MKCX reporting mark thus faded from active use as the corporate entity behind it dissolved and its rail-related assets were absorbed by successor organizations. Morrison Knudsen's legacy in North American railroading is nonetheless significant, representing a period when large industrial conglomerates sought to integrate construction, manufacturing, and equipment leasing into unified rail-focused enterprises.
