History

The Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway traced its origins to a series of corporate predecessors that collectively assembled a north-south line through the eastern portions of Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory in the first decade of the twentieth century. The earliest of these predecessor companies was the Muskogee Union Railway, incorporated in Oklahoma Territory in May 1903, which constructed a short segment running from Wagoner westward to a location called Okay and then onward to a junction point near Muskogee. A separate concern, the Muskogee Bridge Company, was organized around the same time specifically to finance and build the river crossings required to span the Verdigris and Arkansas Rivers along that corridor. This company was absorbed into the Muskogee Union Railway in July 1904. The Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway was then incorporated in Oklahoma Territory in October 1904 and acquired the Muskogee Union Railway almost immediately, taking on the larger task of constructing the remainder of the line between Wagoner and the Red River on the Texas border. The Texas portion of the eventual through route was handled by the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway Company of Texas, chartered under Texas law in March 1910, which built approximately nine miles of track from the Red River crossing near Carpenter's Bluff southward into Denison. A separate Oklahoma corporation, the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad, was formed in July 1910 to construct the critical bridge across the Red River itself, physically linking the Oklahoma and Texas segments into a continuous line. That company went through a series of name changes and was eventually leased for 99 years to the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway in September 1912. Additional trackage north of Wagoner toward Kansas was completed between 1912 and 1913, rounding out the system. The Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway was incorporated under Oklahoma law in July 1919 and purchased the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway that same year, thereafter operating the complete route of approximately 310.5 miles between Denison, Texas, and Baxter Springs, Kansas. The railroad also enjoyed trackage rights over the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, allowing it to extend its reach northward to Joplin, Missouri. The KO&G entered receivership in June 1924, and control passed the following year to the Muskogee Company, a holding entity that grouped several Oklahoma regional railways together under common management. In this configuration the KO&G became one of what were informally known as the Muskogee Roads, a collection that also included the Midland Valley Railroad. The two carriers formalized their relationship through a joint operations agreement, and in 1926 the KO&G secured 5.8 miles of trackage rights over the Midland Valley between Midland Valley Junction and Muskogee. Despite the financial difficulties that had prompted receivership, the KO&G retained genuine strategic value as a bridge route, providing a direct connection between the Missouri Pacific Railroad at Okay, Oklahoma, and the Missouri Pacific's Texas and Pacific Railway subsidiary at Denison, Texas. The Texas and Pacific ultimately acquired the KO&G in 1963, and the railroad's assets were consolidated into the Texas and Pacific's operations shortly thereafter, ending the KO&G's independent existence. The line's reporting mark of KOG passed into history alongside the railroad itself, a relatively modest but operationally useful piece of the broader Missouri Pacific system in the south-central United States.
