History

The Indiana & Ohio Railway traces its origins to 1985, when it acquired its first line connecting Mason and Monroe in southwestern Ohio. From the outset, the railroad pursued both freight and passenger opportunities, establishing a tourist operation called the Indiana & Ohio Scenic Railway along that corridor. That scenic service has since passed to other hands and continues to operate out of Lebanon, Ohio, under the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad name and the ownership of the Cincinnati Railway Company. A second line, running between Norwood and Brecon in Ohio, was added to the system in 1986. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, the Indiana & Ohio Railway expanded steadily by absorbing former Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad trackage and incorporating affiliated short line operations. In 1991, the railroad took over operation of the former DT&I line between Washington Court House and Springfield, Ohio, through a designated operator agreement with the West Central Ohio Port Authority. The system pushed northward in 1997 when it acquired the remaining former DT&I main line extending into Michigan between Diann and Springfield. That same year, the Indiana & Ohio Railroad, which had operated a branch between Valley Junction, Ohio, and Brookville, Indiana, since its formation in 1978, was formally merged into the IORY. Earlier in the decade, two Conrail lines radiating out of Springfield, one toward Bellefontaine and another toward Mechanicsburg, were acquired in 1994 and held under a subsidiary called the Indiana & Ohio Central Railroad until 2004. Corporate ownership of the Indiana & Ohio Railway shifted several times during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. RailTex, a prominent short line holding company, acquired the railroad in 1996. When RailAmerica absorbed RailTex in 2000, the IORY became part of that larger portfolio of regional and short line properties. Genesee & Wyoming then acquired RailAmerica in December 2012, bringing the Indiana & Ohio Railway into one of the largest short line and regional railroad operators in North America. Today the Indiana & Ohio Railway operates approximately 511 miles of track spread across Ohio, southern Michigan, and a small portion of southeastern Indiana, with the vast majority of its mileage concentrated in Ohio. The railroad interchanges with multiple Class I carriers including CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Canadian National, as well as several short line neighbors, making it an important bridge and connecting carrier in a region historically dominated by heavy industrial and agricultural traffic. Its position within the Genesee & Wyoming network ensures continued investment and integration with broader freight flows across the Midwest.
