History

The Indiana Railroad, operating under the reporting mark INRD, is a Class III short line railroad operating in the state of Indiana. The present-day Indiana Railroad should not be confused with the historic interurban electric railway of the same name that served central Indiana during the first half of the twentieth century. The modern INRD was established to provide freight rail service over a corridor in central and southern Indiana, and it has developed into one of the more notable short line operations in the region, particularly for its role in serving coal traffic destined for power generation facilities. The railroad operates a main line running roughly between Sullivan in southwestern Indiana and Terre Haute, continuing through the central part of the state toward Indianapolis and beyond. This corridor traverses a region historically associated with coal mining, and the INRD has built a significant portion of its traffic base around unit train movements of coal. The railroad invested in track improvements along its route to accommodate the demands of heavy unit coal trains, and it developed a reputation for relatively efficient operations by short line standards. Its line through west-central Indiana connects with Class I carriers, providing interchange opportunities that allow traffic to move to broader national markets. As a Class III carrier, the Indiana Railroad exemplifies the role that short line railroads came to play in American freight transportation following the deregulation era ushered in by the Staggers Rail Act of 1980. Short lines such as the INRD often took over branch lines and secondary corridors that larger Class I railroads found unprofitable to maintain, and in many cases these regional operators proved better suited to serve local industries and shippers through more flexible and cost-conscious management. The INRD's focus on a specific traffic niche, particularly energy-related freight, allowed it to sustain operations and invest in infrastructure in a corridor that might otherwise have seen service diminished or eliminated entirely.
