History

Helm Leasing was a North American railroad equipment leasing company that operated under the reporting mark HL. Like other locomotive and rolling stock lessors, Helm Leasing occupied an important niche in the freight and passenger rail industry by acquiring surplus or secondhand equipment and making it available to railroads on short- or medium-term lease arrangements. This business model allowed carriers to meet temporary capacity demands or cover equipment shortfalls without committing to the capital expense of outright purchases, and lessors such as Helm played a practical role in keeping serviceable equipment in productive use rather than allowing it to sit idle or be scrapped prematurely. One notable chapter in Helm Leasing's history involved the acquisition of former Metra EMD F40C locomotives in the early 2000s. When Metra retired most of its fleet of fifteen F40Cs following the arrival of new MPI MP36PH-3S locomotives in 2003 and 2004, twelve of the retired units were sold to Helm Leasing, with one additional unit going to National Railway Equipment. The F40C was a six-axle, 3,200-horsepower diesel-electric locomotive originally built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in 1974 for commuter service on Chicago's Milwaukee Road lines. Following their acquisition by Helm, the locomotives found further employment when Kansas City Southern signed a contract in 2005 to use the twelve units for approximately nine months, demonstrating how leasing companies could match temporarily surplus equipment with railroads having short-term motive power needs. Helm Leasing's role in the broader industry reflected the flexible and cyclical nature of railroad equipment markets in North America, where changes in traffic levels, fleet modernization programs, and carrier mergers frequently created both surpluses and shortages of motive power. By acquiring equipment released from one operation and placing it with another, lessors like Helm helped smooth out these imbalances and extended the working lives of locomotives that might otherwise have faced earlier retirement or scrapping.
