History
First Union Rail Corporation was a major North American railroad equipment leasing company that operated under the reporting mark FURX. As an operating lessor, First Union Rail occupied a significant niche in the freight railroad industry by owning large fleets of locomotives and railcars and leasing them to railroad operators and shippers rather than running trains itself. This business model allowed railroads and other customers to acquire the rolling stock they needed for specific traffic demands without bearing the full capital burden of outright equipment ownership, giving operators flexibility to scale their fleets in response to changing freight volumes and commodity cycles.
The company built and maintained a diverse portfolio of equipment that included multiple locomotive types, among them EMD GP38-2 and SD40-2 units as well as the more modern EMD SD70MAC, alongside a broad range of freight cars spanning boxcars, covered and open hoppers, gondolas, tank cars, flatcars, autorack cars for vehicle transport, and intermodal equipment. This variety allowed First Union Rail to serve customers across virtually every major freight sector in North American railroading, from bulk commodities like coal and grain to automotive and containerized traffic.
In September 2015, Wells Fargo purchased GE Capital Rail Services from General Electric, and that acquisition was combined with the existing First Union Rail business to form a substantially larger enterprise. The combined operation began doing business as Wells Fargo Rail effective January 1, 2016, with headquarters established in Rosemont, Illinois. The merger of these two sizable leasing portfolios created what became the largest railcar and locomotive operating lessor in North America, with a fleet reported at more than 135,000 railcars and approximately 850 locomotives. The FURX reporting mark continued to appear on equipment in service even as the Wells Fargo Rail identity took hold, reflecting the gradual transition inherent in managing such a large and geographically dispersed fleet.
