History

Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México, commonly known as Ferrovalle and operating under the reporting mark FVRD, is a Class III railroad providing terminal and switching services in and around Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The railroad emerged from the broader restructuring of Mexican rail freight operations that followed the privatization of Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México in the late 1990s, when the Mexican government broke up its national railroad system and awarded concessions to private operators. Ferrovalle was established to manage the complex network of tracks, yards, and industrial leads within the Mexico City metropolitan area, serving as a critical interchange point for freight moving through one of the largest urban centers in North America. The railroad is jointly owned by three major freight operators with significant stakes in Mexican and North American railroading. Canadian Pacific Kansas City holds approximately twenty-five percent of the company, while Ferromex and Ferrosur together account for the remaining ownership. This shared ownership structure reflects the practical necessity of having a neutral terminal operator in Mexico City, where multiple Class I carriers converge and require coordinated switching and interchange services. Because Mexico City sits at the geographic heart of Mexico's rail network, Ferrovalle occupies a strategically important position for freight moving between northern and southern Mexico as well as goods destined for the dense industrial and commercial markets of the capital region. Operationally, Ferrovalle maintains a mixed fleet of locomotives sourced from the two dominant North American diesel manufacturers, Electro-Motive Diesel and General Electric. The roster includes switcher and road-switcher models suited to the demanding work of urban terminal operations, including EMD SW1504s, MP15ACs, and GP38-2s alongside GE B23-7s and C30-7s. The railroad's significance in the broader North American rail network lies in its role as a facilitator of interchange between carriers whose transcontinental ambitions increasingly encompass Mexico as a central corridor for trade flows driven by North American manufacturing and commerce.
