History

The East Jersey Railroad and Terminal Company is a Class III short line railroad operating in Hudson County, New Jersey, in the vicinity of Jersey City. It carries the reporting mark EJR and functions primarily as a terminal and switching railroad serving industrial customers along the waterfront and surrounding areas. Though modest in scale compared to the great trunk lines that once dominated the region, the railroad plays a functional role in local freight movement within one of the most historically significant railroad corridors in North America. The area in which the East Jersey Railroad and Terminal operates was once the domain of some of the most storied railroads in American history, including the Central Railroad of New Jersey, which maintained its principal passenger terminal at Communipaw in Jersey City. The CNJ's operations collapsed through a series of bankruptcies, with the railroad ultimately ceasing most freight and passenger operations by the 1970s and being absorbed into Conrail in 1976. The withdrawal of larger carriers from certain industrial trackage in Hudson County created opportunities for smaller terminal operators to serve customers that the major railroads had left behind or found uneconomical to continue serving directly. The East Jersey Railroad and Terminal continues to operate as an active short line, connecting local industries to the broader national rail network through interchange with connecting carriers. Its operations reflect the broader pattern of short line survival in the northeastern United States, where former industrial corridors that once supported dense freight traffic have been reduced to smaller-scale operations serving niche customers. Despite the contraction of heavy industry in the Jersey City area, the railroad has maintained a presence in a region where rail access remains logistically valuable given the proximity to major port facilities and intermodal infrastructure around New York Harbor.
