History

The Dakota and Iowa Railway, operating under the reporting mark DAIR, is a Class III short line railroad serving portions of the upper Midwest. The railroad operates trackage that traces its origins to lines constructed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, commonly known as the Milwaukee Road, which built extensively across South Dakota and the surrounding region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. When the Milwaukee Road collapsed financially and ultimately ceased operations in the early 1980s, much of its branch line network in South Dakota became candidates for abandonment, prompting state and local governments to intervene in order to preserve rail service for agricultural shippers in the region. The Dakota and Iowa Railway emerged as part of the broader effort to maintain short line freight service across rural South Dakota and Iowa, connecting agricultural communities to interchange points with larger Class I carriers. The railroad's operations are centered on serving grain shippers and other agricultural customers, which form the economic backbone of the territories it serves. Connections with carriers such as BNSF Railway provide the railroad access to national freight networks, allowing local shippers to move commodities to distant markets despite their geographic isolation from major rail corridors. As a Class III carrier, the Dakota and Iowa Railway plays a role typical of regional short lines in the American Midwest, acting as a critical link between rural producers and the broader transportation network. Short line railroads of this type became increasingly important across the Great Plains following the wave of large railroad bankruptcies and consolidations in the 1970s and 1980s, filling gaps left by the withdrawal of major carriers from lower-density branch lines. The DAIR continues to serve this function, providing rail options to communities that might otherwise depend entirely on truck transportation for moving bulk agricultural products.
