History

The Charleston and Western Carolina Railway came into existence in 1896 through the consolidation of two predecessor lines that had themselves undergone considerable ownership changes in the preceding decades. The older of the two, the Port Royal and Augusta Railway, traced its origins to 1873, when it completed a 112-mile line connecting Port Royal, South Carolina, with Augusta, Georgia. That project had been financed largely by the Georgia Railroad of Augusta, which sought Atlantic port access beyond Savannah. The Central of Georgia Railway, concerned that expanded facilities at Port Royal might threaten its commercial interests at Savannah, acquired control of the Port Royal and Augusta in 1881. The Central then pursued further expansion into western South Carolina, leasing the Augusta and Knoxville Railroad in 1883 to gain a 68-mile line reaching Greenwood. Over the following years the Central financed additional construction, adding extensions from Greenwood to Spartanburg, a branch from McCormick to Anderson, and another from Laurens to Greenville. In 1886 these various lines were merged to form the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway. Financial difficulties forced the Central of Georgia to relinquish control of both the Port Royal and Augusta and the Port Royal and Western Carolina in 1894, setting the stage for their consolidation into the Charleston and Western Carolina two years later. The newly organized Charleston and Western Carolina Railway brought together roughly 341 miles of track covering a substantial portion of western South Carolina. The system offered passenger service between Augusta and Port Royal, with an important junction at Yemassee, South Carolina, where travelers could connect to Atlantic Coast Line trains bound for either Charleston or Savannah. The railroad carried its reporting mark CWC and functioned as a recognizable regional presence in the South Carolina Piedmont and coastal plain for decades. Passenger operations on the various segments wound down between approximately 1954 and 1957 as automobile travel and changing travel patterns reduced demand. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad acquired control of the Charleston and Western Carolina in 1897 but chose to operate it as a legally distinct subsidiary rather than immediately folding it into the parent system. This arrangement persisted for more than six decades until the ACL formally absorbed the CWC in 1959, extinguishing it as a separate corporate entity. The former CWC trackage then followed the Atlantic Coast Line through its subsequent merger history, passing to the Seaboard Coast Line when that railroad was created in 1967, then to the Seaboard System in 1983, and finally to CSX Transportation when that company was formed in 1986. The legacy of the Charleston and Western Carolina endures primarily through the continued operation of much of its original mileage under CSX Transportation, which has incorporated former CWC corridors into its Augusta, McCormick, and Spartanburg subdivisions. A remnant of the old Laurens to Greenville branch survived into the modern era as the Carolina Piedmont Railroad, a short line operation. Though the Charleston and Western Carolina long ago ceased to exist as an independent railroad, its route structure proved durable enough that it continues to serve freight transportation needs in the South Carolina Piedmont more than a century after the railway's founding.
