History
The EMD SD70ACe-T4 represents the latest evolution of Electro-Motive Diesel's long-running SD70 family, developed to comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 emissions standards, which are among the most stringent ever applied to line-haul diesel locomotives. EMD introduced the SD70ACe-T4 beginning in 2015, pairing the proven SD70ACe platform with the new EMD 1010J prime mover, a engine purpose-built to meet Tier 4 final requirements without relying solely on exhaust aftertreatment. The development of the locomotive represented a significant engineering undertaking for EMD, as achieving Tier 4 compliance in a high-horsepower road locomotive required substantial changes to combustion and fuel delivery systems compared to earlier Tier 3 designs. Production of the SD70ACe-T4 has surpassed 200 units, with deliveries continuing into the present day. The locomotive has found service with Class I railroads operating in the United States, where Tier 4 compliance became mandatory for newly manufactured locomotives. The introduction of the SD70ACe-T4 allowed EMD to remain competitive with General Electric's competing Tier 4 offerings during a period of intense rivalry in the North American locomotive market, a rivalry that took on added significance given ongoing changes in locomotive manufacturer ownership structures during that era. The SD70ACe-T4 continues the lineage established by the original SD70ACe, which had itself succeeded the SD70MAC in 2004, meaning the broader SD70ACe platform has demonstrated remarkable longevity in the North American freight market. The Tier 4 variant maintains the same fundamental C-C wheel arrangement and AC traction system that have defined the high-end segment of EMD's road locomotive offerings for decades, while pushing fuel efficiency and emissions performance to levels substantially beyond what earlier generations of the family could achieve.
Technical notes
The SD70ACe-T4 is powered by the EMD 1010J diesel engine, a departure from the long-serving 710 series prime mover that had underpinned EMD's road locomotives for many years. The 1010J employs advanced fuel injection and combustion management technologies to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions to Tier 4 final levels. The locomotive produces 4,600 horsepower, a modest increase over the 4,300 to 4,500 horsepower ratings of earlier SD70ACe variants, and drives AC traction motors through an inverter-based electrical system consistent with the broader SD70ACe-T4's heritage of three-phase AC traction. The locomotive rides on C-C trucks, maintaining the six-axle configuration that has been standard across the SD70 family. The use of AC traction provides the SD70ACe-T4 with high continuous tractive effort capabilities well-suited to heavy unit train operations, particularly in mountainous territory or on coal and grain routes where sustained pulling power is critical. The 1010J engine block itself represents a clean-sheet design compared to the two-stroke 710 series, incorporating a four-stroke combustion cycle, which is an important distinction from the engine architecture EMD had relied upon through most of its history. This shift allowed EMD to meet emissions targets through improved in-cylinder combustion efficiency rather than depending entirely on exhaust aftertreatment systems, though precise details of the aftertreatment configuration on production units have varied with customer specifications.
