History
The EMD SD40T-2 emerged in 1974 as a specialized variant of the highly successful SD40-2, developed specifically to address the challenges of operating diesel-electric locomotives through the long mountain tunnels and deep canyon grades of the American West. Electro-Motive Division engineered the type in response to requests from western railroads whose crews had long struggled with heat buildup and inadequate cooling when running standard locomotives through confined, poorly ventilated passages. The designation reflected both its lineage and its purpose, and EMD internally described the model as an SD40-2 with cooling system modifications rather than adopting the "tunnel motor" nickname that railroad workers and enthusiasts would popularize over the years. Three railroads acquired all 312 units built between April 1974 and July 1980: the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, and the Southern Pacific subsidiary St. Louis Southwestern Railway, commonly known as the Cotton Belt. Southern Pacific took the largest share of the production run, deploying the locomotives heavily over its demanding Donner Pass and Tehachapi routes in California as well as other mountain territories. The Denver and Rio Grande Western similarly found the type well suited to its Colorado mountain crossings, where Moffat Tunnel and other confined grades had long taxed conventional cooling arrangements. The SD40T-2 became closely associated with the character of western mountain railroading during the final decades of the twentieth century, and many units accumulated substantial mileage in helper and road service across challenging terrain. Following the 1996 merger of Southern Pacific into Union Pacific, large numbers of former SP tunnel motors continued working under new ownership for some years. The type's legacy is preserved in part through surviving examples at institutions including the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, Utah, and the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado, where Denver and Rio Grande Western units remain on display.
Technical notes
The SD40T-2 rides on a C-C wheel arrangement, meaning two three-axle trucks, and is powered by a sixteen-cylinder version of the EMD 645E3 prime mover producing 3,000 horsepower. The locomotive uses direct current traction motors, consistent with the mainstream EMD practice of the era. The defining engineering feature distinguishing it from the standard SD40-2 is the repositioning of the radiator air intake openings to a lower location at the rear of the carbody. On a conventional locomotive the intakes sit high on the hood, but in tunnel service this placement drew in exhaust fumes and superheated air trapped near the ceiling of confined passages. By drawing cooling air from closer to the floor level, where fresher and cooler air tends to settle, the SD40T-2 maintained more effective engine temperature management through extended tunnel runs. Southern Pacific's units were built to a length of 70 feet 8 inches and carried a fuel tank capacity of approximately 4,400 US gallons, while Denver and Rio Grande Western's units used a somewhat smaller tank of roughly 4,000 US gallons. These dimensional differences reflected each railroad's operational preferences and route characteristics. The closely related SD45T-2 applied the same tunnel motor cooling concept to the larger 645E7 prime mover, and the two variants together represented EMD's principal answer to the sustained demand from western mountain carriers for motive power capable of reliable performance in some of the most thermally hostile operating environments on the North American rail network.
