History
Full prototype page →The GP40TC was a specialized passenger locomotive built by General Motors Diesel, the Canadian subsidiary of General Motors, specifically for GO Transit, the commuter rail service operating in and around Toronto, Ontario. The locomotives entered production in 1966 and were delivered over a period extending into 1968, with eight units ultimately constructed for the agency. Their purpose was to provide reliable motive power for GO Transit's expanding commuter operations, and the design reflected the practical demands of short-haul passenger service in the Greater Toronto Area. GO Transit operated the GP40TC fleet for roughly two decades before selling all eight units to Amtrak in 1988. Under Amtrak's ownership, the locomotives were assigned to Chicago and deployed on short-haul corridor trains in the Midwest, where their passenger-oriented equipment continued to serve a useful purpose. Though not among Amtrak's most celebrated motive power acquisitions, the GP40TC fleet provided serviceable performance during a period when Amtrak was piecing together its locomotive roster from various sources. In 2005, Norfolk Southern undertook a comprehensive rebuilding program for all eight locomotives at its Juniata Shops facility in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Following the rebuild, the units were reclassified as GP38H-3 locomotives, reflecting changes made to their mechanical configuration. In their rebuilt form, the locomotives found a new role supporting maintenance-of-way operations and serving as standby power for Amtrak's Downeaster service running between Boston and Brunswick, Maine, representing a final chapter of utility for what had begun as commuter locomotives in Canada.
