History
Full prototype page →The SD70ACU emerged as a practical solution to a persistent problem facing North American railroads in the early 2010s: what to do with hundreds of idled SD90MAC and SD9043MAC locomotives that had proven troublesome in their original configuration yet represented substantial investments in heavy-duty six-axle platforms. EMD developed the SD70ACU program to breathe new life into these cores by rebuilding them into more reliable and economical road locomotives, combining the proven mechanical foundations of the SD90-series carbody with updated prime movers and AC traction technology. The program began in earnest around 2013 and has since produced more than 200 units, making it one of the more significant locomotive rebuilding efforts in recent decades. Union Pacific Railroad was the primary customer for the SD70ACU program, which made logical sense given that the railroad had operated a large fleet of SD9043MAC locomotives that had accumulated a difficult service record largely attributable to their original 6,000-horsepower prime movers. Rather than scrapping or indefinitely storing these units, UP worked with EMD to have the locomotives rebuilt using the existing carbodies and trucks while replacing the problematic H-series engines with the more dependable 710G3B-EC prime mover. The resulting locomotives entered service rated at 4,300 horsepower, a reduction from their original output but a figure far more consistent with reliable, long-term performance in heavy freight service. The SD70ACU program represents an important chapter in the broader story of locomotive fleet management and sustainability in the railroad industry. By retaining as much of the original structure as practical while replacing the components most responsible for unreliability, the program allowed a major railroad to reclaim value from assets that had largely been sidelined. The rebuilt units effectively rejoined active road service alongside newer SD70ACe locomotives, and their continued production through the mid-2010s and beyond demonstrated that the rebuilding approach offered a cost-effective alternative to outright new locomotive procurement for railroads managing large, aging fleets.
