History
Full prototype page →The GE ES40DC emerged from General Electric's broader Evolution Series program, which was developed to comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 2 emissions standards scheduled to take effect in 2005. As the direct successor to GE's Dash 9 Series of freight locomotives, the Evolution Series represented a significant step forward in locomotive technology, and the ES40DC specifically replaced the Dash 9-40CW in GE's catalog. The first pre-production Evolution Series units appeared in 2003, with the ES40DC entering service and being delivered exclusively to Norfolk Southern Railway, which had also been the primary customer for the Dash 9-40CW it replaced. Between 2003 and 2014, GE built a total of 1,013 ES40DC units. The model's relationship with CSX Transportation came about in an unusual fashion: CSX had originally ordered ES44DC locomotives rated at 4,400 horsepower, but in 2009 those units were administratively reclassified as ES40DCs after being de-rated to 4,000 horsepower. The operational demands of Norfolk Southern's network, however, eventually made the lower power rating impractical for a portion of the fleet, and several ES40DCs were subsequently repowered to restore them to ES44DC output levels. This pattern of re-rating and repowering reflected the competitive pressures railroads faced in balancing fuel economy against the need for high tractive effort on demanding routes. The ES40DC occupies a noteworthy place in North American locomotive history as part of an Evolution Series lineup that Trains Magazine recognized as one of the ten locomotives that changed railroading, the only post-1972 locomotive series to appear on that list. While other Evolution Series variants such as the ES44AC and ES44DC attracted broader customer bases across multiple Class I railroads, the ES40DC remained more narrowly focused in its original deployment, making it a somewhat specialized chapter within an otherwise widely adopted family of locomotives.
