The EMD SD75I was a diesel-electric locomotive produced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division during the mid-to-late 1990s, representing an extension of the SD70 series lineage that itself grew from the earlier SD60 platform. The model emerged as part of EMD's broader competitive response to General Electric's growing presence in the high-horsepower locomotive market, with the SD75 series achieving its increased output by pushing the 16-cylinder 710G3 engine beyond the 4,000 horsepower threshold established by its predecessors. The "I" in the model designation referred specifically to the isolated cab configuration, known within EMD as the WhisperCab, which the company had previously applied to models such as the SD60I and SD70I. Only 20 SD75I locomotives were constructed over the model's production span from 1995 to 1999, making it a comparatively rare type. Ontario Northland Railway was among the operators of the SD75I, receiving a small allocation of the type for service on its northern Ontario network. Canadian National Railway was the largest buyer of the model overall, acquiring a substantial fleet that formed a meaningful part of that railroad's heavy road power roster during the late 1990s. Burlington Northern Santa Fe also received a modest number of units. The SD75I represented the final EMD model to carry the "I" designation in its name, as subsequent isolated-cab variants adopted the "M" suffix regardless of cab configuration. The legacy of the SD75I includes the SD75IACC rebuild program initiated by Progress Rail beginning in 2023, targeting Canadian National's fleet. These rebuilds replaced the original direct-current traction system with an alternating-current arrangement, with the first rebuilt units entering service in July 2024. This conversion program effectively extended the working lives of the original SD75I locomotives while bringing their traction technology in line with more contemporary standards.
