The GE B30-7 was introduced in 1977 as part of General Electric's Dash 7 series, representing the manufacturer's effort to refine and improve upon the earlier Universal series locomotives. It served as the direct successor to the U30B, carrying forward the four-axle, 3,000-horsepower concept while incorporating the fuel efficiency improvements and reliability enhancements that defined the Dash 7 generation. In outward appearance the B30-7 closely resembled its stablemate the B23-7, the two models sharing a common design lineage, with the primary distinction being the higher-output prime mover fitted to the B30-7. Production continued through the early 1980s and encompassed several variants beyond the baseline model. In June 1980 GE developed a modification that allowed a 12-cylinder version of the FDL engine to produce the same 3,000 horsepower as the original 16-cylinder installation, and subsequent variants adopted this approach as a means of reducing fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The B30-7A was built exclusively for Missouri Pacific, while the B30-7A1 variant, which featured a distinctive high short hood, was produced solely for the Southern Railway. Cabless booster units designated B30-7A(B) were constructed for Burlington Northern. Among the railroads that operated the standard B30-7 was the St. Louis Southwestern Railway. By the late 1990s and into the 2000s, most B30-7 series units had been retired from mainline service as larger and more modern power displaced them. A small number found second careers on short line and regional railroads, and some Union Pacific units were converted for remote control yard service. The Providence and Worcester Railroad acquired five former Burlington Northern cabless units around 2001, later passing them to National Railway Equipment in 2015. A handful of locomotives have been preserved, including a Chesapeake and Ohio example at the Lake Shore Railway Museum in North East, Pennsylvania, donated by CSX in 2017.
